Episode 6 - Scott Hill

Episode 6 of the Chatt Art podcast features the extraordinary Scott Hill.

This episode comes to you just as his 25th Anniversary exhibition graces the walls of the River Gallery in the Bluff view Art District in Chattanooga. The exhibit is full of soulful paintings that seem to celebrate the journey of the seeker.

There is a quality about Scott’s work that stops you in your tracks and encourages you to just stay awhile and remember that dream you can’t shake, a book you once read or a poem that you wish you could write. It is an experience of great adventure and calming reflection that seems to stick with you for many days to come.

'Let it Shine' ... Oil on Board... 12 x 9

One of my favorite things about Scott’s work is that it empowers the viewer to imagine their own story within the work. As the viewer, you get the opportunity to visualize the past, present and future narrative unfolding within the work. These paintings leave you with the kind of feeling you get at the end of a great novel or an exceptional film, where the questions are not all answered and there are thousands of possibilities.

These endless possibilities create a sense of timelessness that feels otherworldly and right now simultaneously. That seems to be why there are a handful words that continually surface when describing a Scott Hill artwork…

ethereal… dreamlike… Romantic… timeless

These descriptions seem to come from both the narrative imagery as well as the very nature of the surface they are painted upon. These surfaces are just about as varied as the subjects that flow across them.

At a Scott Hill exhibit you will not just see canvas work, but also mixed media pieces as well. Paintings can be found on all kinds of objects... like the surface of an antique clock... a vintage matchbook cover… an organ pipe... or a postcard that someone sent many years ago.

These objects are often things that seem to have lived many lifetimes telling the stories of former owners or adventures once taken. They are extraordinary pieces that have been discovered in antique stores or yard sales. Each one seems to hold a thrill of the treasure hunt, a hobby that has colored the history of the Hill family and has made a mark on Scott's work as well.

This special episode offers insight into a world of questions like...

How does Scott create mood and hazy landscapes in paint?

What kind of collections live in the Scott Hill Studio?

Did Scott once paint on a motorcycle?

And what is the worst advice he was ever given.... just to name a few.

Scott Hill's 25th Anniversary Exhibition is available for viewing until Christmas, so don't miss out on seeing this amazing work for yourselves. This is one exhibit that is sure to inspire.
