Episode 3 of the Chatt Art podcast features the one and only Maria Willison. Maria is an immensely talented sculptor living, working and teaching in the Chattanooga area. Her portfolio is like a Psalm to the human form both in physicality and spirituality.
What makes Maria's work so special is the narrative nature of her approach to sculpture. A Maria Willison work will not only feature the human figure in remarkably beautiful accuracy, but it will often present that figure in a posture that speaks to the nature of the human experience. There seems to be this universal human sensibility present in her work that makes it incredibly relatable to her viewers.
This piece, entitled 'Vertigo,' is a great example of Maria's gentle hand that forms a story just as gracefully as it forms clay.

Maria Willison's work features a vast mastery of sculpture, filled with representations of the human figure in the round, bas relief and portrait busts. Each work seems to carry it's own story told in texture, gold leaf or scale.

This relief sculpture is entitled 'Imprisoned Lightening.' It's femininity coupled with the angular restricted edges delivers a powerful union vulnerability and fortitude. Maria's unique approach to the visible and invisible is so evident in this work... a stunning display of talent and finesse.
